GDG Port Harcourt held an event titled UX MASTERCLASS 2015, it was an Introductory UX workshop held to give attendees hands-on UX Design practices. The event lasted for 2 days, it was held on Friday 14 and Saturday 15, August 2015 at Focushub training room.
GDG Port Harcourt UX Masterclass event focused on these workshop;
- Working on a new product idea that has not yet been launched
- Working on an existing product and are looking to iterate.
Workshop materials from the above given website was provided so attendees have all required material needed for a good hands-on workshop.
30 Persons registered for this event using the event registration form, but only 18 was selected to attend the event.
The 18 selected attendees were divided into 4 groups and each group assigned with the task of providing the UX Solutions to Personas problems in the UX Masterclass workbook provided by GOOGLE INC.
The event started at exactly 11:00 AM on Day 1 with the speaker Gino Osahon who handled the workshop. He started day 1 by telling attendees about GDG PH and the kind of events they organize. He then explained what UX was all about and how implementing UX Design in your apps development help you develop apps that users will accept and be happy to you. Using the slide presentation from the UX website, he walked the attendees through every step of the workshop. At the end of day 1, these topics were covered:
- Basics of the UX process
- Generating ideas and deciding features based on personas
- Sketching simple user interface flows
- Preparing for user testing
The interaction and collaboration between members of each group was awesome as they brainstormed heavily to come up with project goals, features and paper prototypes for their given personas. It was really interesting seeing them deeply immersed in their work to provide a good UX solution to their personas.
Day 1 ended at about 6:00 PM with User Testing homework to do and a group picture at the Hub.
Day 2 started at about 12:00 noon and attendees went straight into reviewing the user testing result gotten back from their interviews with families and friends as part of their assignment given them the previous day. The results were tuned into action items and this was then used to iterate their design. After modifications and new features suggestion which enabled them come up with new designs, the speaker Gino Osahon then took them on the next module which was “Launch and Beyond ” this introduced them into launching their applications and also how to follow up and get feedback from users.
This was then followed immediately by the Group Presentation stage, all 4 groups had to put their work together and prepare for final presentation. Each group presented an overview of the features they have designed, top user benefits and what they learned through user testing. After a successful vote for the winner team, Group A emerged as the winner with 12.5 points over Group B which scored 11.5 points. Group C had 8.5 and Group D with 6. Each member of the winning team was awarded Google branded t-shirts and Android development Kits; this was then followed by group photo session. Feedback from this event is still being collected from attendees using Google forms.
